Mis-en-Scene: Blog #4
In the scene "Il Labirinto Del Fauno Scena più famosa" from Pans Labyrinth, Ofelia has a task that she must complete. she has to go into another world and using a key she got from her last task, open a door and retrieve whats inside. all the while she must avoid the huge table full of food, and eat nothing, because if she did, it would be the death of her.
Camera Angles:
When she walks in the camera pans over the whole table filled gloriously with mounds of food. The camera follows her as she walks along the table until the end, where pale man sits still, eyes on a Tarnished brass plate in front of him, as if it had been there for a while. The camera then jumps to the ceiling and shows portraits of the pale man slaughtering children and eating them. It then pans over to a pile of small shoes, children's shoes, to show you how many childrens lives hes taken. When she opends the little door, the camera angle comes from inside the door which I think is interesting. It jumps back to the sand timer to give emphasis on how much time she has left, and how she has to move quickly. My favorite camera shor is when the Pale man is chasing he down the hallway, and it gets a shot of his feet and then her feet and the movement of both of them. making the chase seem more interesting.
Setting and Props:
The scene takes place in what looks like some sort of banquet hall made out of stone with a huge fireplace at the back. It's kinda dark and erie looking, with the dim lighting. The first prop we see is the banquet table; all of the glorious food and goblets galore. The first prop she touches is the tarnished brass plate with pale man's eyes. She opens her fairy holder, and then pulls out a key. She must use it to open the door, and once she does so she gets a dagger from it. when she gets to the end of the hall she pulls out a piece of chalk which breaks, and climbs up on a rickety chair.
Lighting:
The whole scene has natural lighting. Lighting from the fire, and from the holes in the ceilings and wall, you can see the light beaming in. A good example is when she's running down the hallway, you can see the light beaming in through the walls in straight lines onto the floor. Certain parts had more dramatic lighting; like when ofelia is standing on the chair trying to figure out what to do. The camera is right on her face and the lighting is coming from below, dramaticizing the moment.
Costumes and Makeup:
Ofelia just looks like a normal girl, dressed in a dress and a sweater. the pale man obviously isnt real so thats all movie makeup, which is amazing!
Sound:
There is alot of diegetic sound in it. footsteps, the sound of her eating a grape, the sound of the chair wobbeling on the floor, and all of the gasps and sounds coming from her and the pale man. Some of the sound effects are supposed to seem diegetic but are over exaggerated, such as the sound of the key coming out: it makes a loud ringing noise, but there is nothing it would have rang against. The sword also makes a sound like it is being unsheathed, yet shes only pulling it out of a nook in the wall. And after Ofelia eats the grape, the Pale man's hands rising from the table have a loud jarring scary noise, most likely to raise the fear in the audience.
When she is looking at the portraits on the ceiling there is a non diegetic sound of infants crying, emphasising the portraits because he eats children. Another non-diegetic sound comes when she walks past the table at the end, something looks like it clicks in her brain and she goes to eat a grape. It makes a sparkeling noise, kinda like shes being put under a spell or something.

Color Me Lucky: Blog #2
I love dark, deep colors; red, purple, black. Colors that are more emotional in my mind. Those colors stick out to me, make me think, make me feel. Those colors describe a part of me. But how sad do those colors look? I'm not always depressed or angry, so those don't show who I am that well. And I mean, how depressing would that look?? Coddrops asks "Do you want a modern look and feel? Or is the desired effect more classical?" Which shows that color and text change how it is portrayed. "Mood can sometimes be about more than just a font." Color obviously effects it, like Red can be anger or love, Blue: sad, cold. etc. "Of course, your feelings about color can also be deeply personal and are often rooted in your own experience or culture" (Cherry) A specific color could bring up a memory or remind you of something in your life.
I wanted to make a laid back kinda homey feel to my blog. I love fall, and nature, so I thought I would incorporated that. It shows the happy side of who I am. its kinda girly, and cute! :)

Amusing Ourselves To Death: Blog #3
Today’s society is most definitely reliant on technology. Cell
phones, GPS, Google, computers. I think it’s safe to say those are a part of
everyday life for most people. Personally,
I could not live without my phone, even for a day at most. We have instant access to anything and
everything; music, shopping, friends. You are never left out of the loop with
things like Twitter and Facebook. I mean it’s great to be so technologically
advanced, but to be so dependent on it is honestly sad! Human contact is like
gone. We all sit with our phones in front of our faces instead of having a
decent conversation with someone. Were always checking our phones and honestly,
we. Are. Lazy. As Les Palmer from Peninsula Clarion
puts it: “Instead of spending our spare time outdoors
and getting some fresh air and exercise, we become slaves to technology.”
Kids these days, even some adults, don’t even know how to read and navigate a
map! They’re so used to using Google maps or some online navigation system. I saw
this really interesting video on YouTube that this reminds me of. This guy is in a beautiful city, and all he wants to do is look at his phone, because he thinks that's what will help him see the city best, but not once does he look up to realize whats' around him. Hes passing up all the beautiful things in life because hes so technologically obsorbed.
However, we have new medical technology that helps us live longer, learn more and become a better community and population as humans. In my opinion, THAT is the good technology. The kind that can help us give back to the world, and that can help people.
I would definitely
describe myself media literate. I use different kinds of media in my everyday
life, I understand it, and create it. I use online media every day, with
twitter, news, and in school we read books.
The post man is right. I think that
our technology is moving so fast, something is going to cause our demise. Like as
of now, we are polluting our earth with vehicles, and modern technology in
general. We have military technology that could backfire on us one day;
different countries competing to be the best. We are too absorbed in what’s
right in front of us than with the future repercussions of our actions.
